Data Register Information

The Weddell Sea Buoy Data from an air-sea interaction project of the Finnish
Antarctic Research Program (FINNARP) is included in the diskette in packed
form. The files are packed using the lha.exe program, which is also
included. It can be used to unpack the files. Give command "lha" to get
instructions about the program.

The diskette contains the following files:

daydat.lzh: packed diurnal means in files tot5895.day, tot5892.day,
tot5893.day, tot1282.day, tot5908.day. The numbers refer to the
buoy identification number in the Argos system.

Single observations form each buoy in packed files: tot5895.lzh, tot5892.lzh,
tot5893.lzh, tot1282.lzh, tot5908.lzh. The corresponding original files have
the extension *.fin.

*.fin files

order of columns:

   - buoy identification number
   - observation date; year, month, day
   - observation time; hour, minutes, seconds
   - compression index
   - atmospheric pressure (hPa)
   - hull temperature (deg C)
   - air temperature from the lower measurement level (deg C)
   - air temperature from the higher measurement level (deg C)
   - relative humidity from the lower measurement level (%)
   - relative humidity from the higher measurement level (%)
   - wind speed from propeller anemometer (m/s)
   - snow depth (cm), only for buoy 1282
   - wind direction (deg)
   - buoy orientation (deg)

data of the buoys 5892, 5893, 1282, and 5908 includes additionally

   - water temperatures, cf. the technical reports for the depths,
10 columns for buoy 5892, 20 for buoys 1282 and 5908, and one
(at the depth of 6 m) for buoy 5893.
   - latitude
   - longitude (oE)
   - location class

*.day files are as *.fin files, except that the following columns are lacking:
   - observation time
   - compression index
   - location class
Wind direction is calculated as a vector average in *.day files

Error codes:

The following error codes are used when the sensors were not functioning
properly:

air temperature: 999.99
relative humidity: 999
wind speed: 99.9
wind direction: 999
water temperatures: 99.99
location coordinates 999.999

Sample lines of *.fin files of the buoys 5895 and 5892

tot5895.fin:
5895 891224 173128 1 992.0 -2.2 -4.10 -4.00 80 79 8.0 181 174.4

tot5892.fin:
5892 900102 173645 5 992.0 -1.4 -2.00 -2.10 90 92 2.6 58 174 -1.9 -1.9 -1.9
-1.6 -1.9 -1.8 -1.8 -1.9 -1.8 -1.8 -72.740 331.152 1

Notes:

- cf. the technical reports for the observation heights, sensor resolutions,
  accuracies, etc.
- buoy 5893: wind direction not included
hull temperature = sea surface temperature
- buoys 1282 and 5908: relative humidities not included
- Ice accretion in the anemometers sometimes destroyed the wind data. The
buoys (except 1282) included both propeller and cup anemometers. If the
readings from the both anemometers were at the treshold value and the wind
direction kept constant in successive observations (hours), the anemometers
were regarded to be frozen. Then, an error code (99.9) was used. Low wind
speeds may be erroneous in other cases as well, if ice accretion has
partially restricted the rolling of the anemometers.
