Research Opportunities in the Transantarctic Mountains

An NSF-sponsored workshop to select the next deep field camp and logistics hub in the Transantarctic Mountains will be held June 25-27, 2012 at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.  The workshop is open to all U.S. scientists, from early career to well established and in all disciplines, who are interested in research questions that require fieldwork in the Transantarctic Mountains.  We will explore the multi-disciplinary research opportunities and priorities from two potential logistics hubs and discuss a long-term vision for future deep field camps.  At the end of the workshop, participants will rank the sites by their scientific priority and the one with the greatest potential scientific returns will be proposed as the focus for the 2013 NSF-OPP solicitation.  The final day of the workshop will be dedicated to assisting new investigators understand Antarctic field logistics and begin drafting a logistics plan.  This workshop is funded by the NSF Office of Polar Programs and will provide travel support to a limited number of investigators.  More information is available at the URL:  tamcamp.org  where you can register your interest, contribute resources and submit questions.  Additional workshop information will be posted on the website as it becomes available.
