Visit #1: Field Report: Pegasus North AWS Date: 17/Jan/2010 Time: 5:15 pm local McMurdo time Team members: Matthew Lazzara, Nicole Schroeder, and Lee Welhouse Measurements to the surface (bottom of the following): * Delta-T: 28.24 inches (0.72 meters) * Junction Box: 42.50 inches (1.1 meters) * Electronics Enclosure: 30.25 inches (0.77 meters) * Solar Panel: 86.25 inches (2.2 meters) * Boom: 131.25 inches (3.3 meters) Battery Voltages: Not measured UNAVCO GPS: Not available (both in cargo system for WAIS and Tall Tower) Work description: We found that the AWS is indeed right on the approach to the new skiway at Pegasus - right across from Ken Borek Air and the far side of "town" We got our own shuttle ride out on a Delta, and then thanks to help from shuttles and the met. observers, they hooked us up with ann AGE person to snowmobile us out across the taxiway to the AWS. There is a light right at one of our anchors, and the light string goes right by another anchor. For future visits, I have to talk to Cara Sucher at Crary Lab about how to handle it. We will have to likely check out with the tower or the firehouse, if the tower is closed, at the very least. We found that there was a need for a second clamp that had the spot to fit into the notch on the wind bird. Of course, then we discovered, the pipe moves too! So, we need to get some teflon/plumber's tape on it....and to do that meant tools and items we didn't take with us. We electrical taped the outside to keep it from moving for now. We'll have to go back with either a fixed unit or remove this, take it to the lab and go back to fix it. Meantime, it is aligned with the boom, as best as we could. If we can, we will replace the solar panel - the cable is cracked in many, many places. (Can we remove that for a day or two and put a new one on later?) Also other cables were loose - and need taping up, etc. The sensor cable cloth is nearly all off as well. Due to the late work, and shuttle schedule and arrangements, we were allowed to enjoy dinner at the Pegasus Field Galley.
