Forecast discussion: A Ross Sea low will help to develop a low to the north of Ross Island today and bring in low clouds and precipitation down the McMurdo Sound. Ross Island terrain features, Mt Erebus and Mt Terror, will help to block most of the moisture coming from the north but as the low-pressure system intensifies and moves eastward winds will wrap around the east side of Ross Island and more moisture will come in from the Ross Ice Shelf tonight and tomorrow. So, expect this to be a widespread event, with decreasing surface visibility with increasing snowfall, strengthening easterly winds, and temps trending colder until early Friday. Indications are that two passing surface troughs, more of a localized event, will then move through the airfield and cause periods of strong winds and blowing snow on Saturday and Sunday.
