File name "README.NTR"

The files with the extension "NTR" contain the monthly mean temperatures for
Antarctic Stations referenced in the paper entitled "Antarctic climate anomalies
surrounding the minimum in the Southern Oscillation Index" by S.R. Smith and 
C.R. Stearns.  

The files are in the following format:

   The first line contains the name of the station, the item ("Temperature",
which is the monthly mean temperature in deg Celsius), WMO#, latitude (degrees
minutes), longitude (degrees minutes), and height above sea level in meters in
A80 Format.

   The remaining lines each represent one year of monthly mean temperature
data.  The format for each line is I2, 12F6.1.  The first item is the last two
digits of the year,  The next 12 items are the monthly mean air temperature
starting with January and ending with December.  Missing data are indicated by
999.9.  The appendix in the paper states that missing data are indicated by 444.4.
