November 2004 was a month of transition for the South Pole upper air system. The Vaisala Marwin system was replaced with a Vaisala DigiCORA III system. The new system is being used with the same RS-90 radiosondes. There were data-communication problems encountered with the DigiCORA system after running it for a few days, so the Marwin was put back into use for a week while a local network issue was resolved. Therefore, the data files for November are a mix of the two systems. The Marwin system was run for the following dates, with .gps and .dat upper air files available: 11/01 00z through 11/13 00z and 11/18 12z through 11/24 12z The DigiCORA III system was run for the following dates, with edt data files available. The edt files are raw data files that are similar in format, but not identical, to the .gps files. 11/13 12z through 11/18 00z and 11/25 00z through 11/30 12z Starting with December 2004, all soundings should be run with the DigiCORA sysetm and the data archive will be the edt files in the form edt_mmddyyhh.txt where hh is the valid time of the sounding, either 00z or 12z.
