Forecast Discussion: High pressure and favorable weather with light winds and the chance for periods

of low ceilings today and fog tomorrow at the airfields. On Wednesday-Thursday, (24-25 Dec) indications

are for an intense high- pressure ridge forming on the plateau to the true west of Ross Island bringing in

strong winds from the true south-southwest gusting 35 to 45 knots at the airfields and the potential for poor visibility

0000 to 1000 meters due to blowing snow from 24/1400L to 25/0900L.

(Surface winds from this direction do not usually bring in blowing snow, but due to the high wind speeds across the

terrain features, local effects may cause secondary circulations such as eddy’s that may cause blowing snow.)

Also of note, this system is expected to cause extremely strong winds gusting 50 to 60 knots and

poor visibility due to blowing snow at Taylor Dome, Allan Hills, and the western dry valley’s to

include Lake Bonney from 23/0000L to 25/1200L.
