With the models backing off on the intensity of the winds, the low on the ice shelf will still be responsible for some of the weather today. Cloud decks developing on the ice shelf are progressing towards station, bringing some possible snow. While some of the cloud layers may dry out, there will be some localized cloud development around Ross Island later, also contributing to periods of light snow.
Later this week, a large low enters the Ross Sea from the north, extending all the way across the Ross Sea and Ice Shelf. The low will shift its trajectory towards the Transantarctic Mountains, positioning itself to generate high wind speeds at McMurdo. Expect conditions to deteriorate quickly with increasing winds and sustained visibility drops.
